Don’t Fear the Grape’s Dr. Loosen Podcast

Monday, February 8th, 2010

We just ran across this fun podcast on Twitter. It’s by Don’t Fear the Grape, a wine blog and podcast that bills itself as being for people who don’t drink wine. In the podcast, Tad, Patrick and John taste Dr. L, and while their commentary may be a bit basic for wine geeks, for the rest of us, it’s a fun learning session on how to fully enjoy a glass of good Riesling.

Don’t Fear the Grape describes itself as an informative, no nonsense blog and weekly podcast for people who are interested in wine but are intimidated by it and the wine culture.

You can listen to the podcast here.

Dr. L is No. 62 on Wine Spectator Top 100

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

dr-l-bottleOur phones are ringing off the hook and our email boxes are stuffed this week with response to our Dr. L Riesling being rated No. 62 on Wine Spectator’s 2009 Top 100 List

Wine Spectator is perhaps the most influential wine magazine in the United States. Wine Spectator Senior Editor Bruce Sanderson, who reviews German wines for the publication, wrote of our 2008 Dr. L:

“Sleek and tangy, showing apricot, lime and mango flavors matched to a lively structure. There’s nice harmony and persistence through the finish.”

The wine was rated at 90 points and designated a “Best Value.”

Wine Spectator’s Web site describes the selection process: “Each year, Wine Spectator editors survey the wines reviewed over the previous 12 months and select our Top 100, based on quality, value, availability and excitement. Since 2009 was a year of economic retrenchment, we focused closely on value to choose our newest list from more than 17,000 wines.”

Wine Spectator’s announcement is posted on the magazine’s Web site (early access available only to online members). The Top 100 list will be published in the Dec. 31 issue of the Wine Spectator magazine.

For those of you who haven’t yet tried it, Dr. L Riesling embodies the elegant and racy style of classic Mosel Riesling. It is refreshing and fruity, with a fine mineral edge that is typical of the region. The grapes used to make Dr. L come exclusively from traditional vineyards with steep slopes and slate soil. By working closely with growers on long-term contracts, brothers Ernst and Thomas Loosen are able to ensure excellent quality in every vintage.

We are thrilled by this recognition for the Dr. L Riesling, which we believe has consistently been an extraordinary value in classic Mosel Riesling since its first vintage, in 1995. We are also happy to see that Riesling, the most noble of white grape varieties, continues to win new fans around the world. As we like to say, “The world is going to L!”

Wilf’s Wine Press Reviews Dr. L

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Wilf’s Wine Press reviewed our Dr. L Riesling in the August 2009 newsletter.
Here’s what they had to say:

“If you are not convinced that German winemakers are out to win you over with their new style of wine, then try this next Riesling. Right from the elegant, screw-capped bottle to the last drop you will love this one. With a mere 8.5% alcohol you might be tempted to drink most of the bottle yourself but your friends will love you when you share the Dr. L Riesling 2008. Fresh, clean, floral, sweet fruit aromas foretell the lush flavours you can expect. A slight effervescence on the palate with stone fruit and Riesling grape flavours leading to a satisfying lingering finish. A plateful of spicy foods and this wine from the Mosel will be on your drink-now favourite list.”
