J. Christopher Open House This Weekend

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

If you’re in Oregon’s wine country this Memorial Day weekend, be sure to stop by the beautiful new J. Christopher Winery in the lovely town of Newberg (a joint venture between Ernie Loosen and Jay Somers).

You’ll get to taste some great wines, see our new caves and all the building work we accomplished this year.

Saturday and Sunday (May 28 and 29)
11 am to 3 pm
Taste six wines for 10 bucks!

Directions

Winemaker Jay Somers has a bunch of new wines available:

2010 Cristo Irresisto (pink): An easy-drinking, passionate pink blend of mostly Grenache and Syrah, sourced from vineyards on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge. Cases: 210. Retail: $15.

2010 Cristo Misto (white): A dry, stainless-steel-fermented quaffer made from Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and just a touch of Riesling. Cases: 200. Retail: $15.

2010 Sauvignon Blanc, Croft Vineyard: An intense, single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc sourced from an excellent, organically farmed site in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Cases: 130. Retail: $20.

2009 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley: A classic Oregon Pinot, blended from excellent vineyards in the Dundee Hills, Chehalem Mountains and Eola Hills AVAs. Cases: 1,500. Retail: $25.

NEW! 2009 Pinot Noir, “Nuages”: A very engaging, fine, focused, full-impact blend from two excellent vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. Cases: 170. Retail: $35.

They’ll be pouring and selling these five wines, plus the 2008 Sandra Adele Pinot Noir. Other ways to buy: request them from your local wine retailer, or order online through the new J. Christopher website.

And have you joined the J. Cru yet? Membership in this (free) and exclusive group entitles you to advance news and special deals. A very good thing because J. Christopher wines tend to sell out quickly because they make them in very small batches (also, they taste very good). To join, just click the “J Cru” button the website’s front page.

5 Groovy Tips for Enjoying Wine Riot

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Heading to the Chicago Wine Riot this Saturday (May 21)?

Here are ten tips to make sure you have the best time EVER!

1. Eat. You’re going to be tasting a lot of wine, so unless you’re willing to spit, make sure you’ve got food in your tummy to soak up all that alcohol, otherwise, you might wake up two days later wearing a gorilla costume in the store front window of a department store in Tallahassee.

2. Download (and use) the Wine Riot mobile app. That way you’ll be able to remember what you liked and, most importantly, impress your date when perusing restaurant wine lists three months from now.

3. Talk to your pourers! They LIVE to answer questions about the wine. Ask them: What foods pair well with the wine? What kind of grapes are in it? What’s special about how the wines are made? How does the vintage (year) you’re drinking compares with older vintages? What was the 2010 harvest like?

4. Hydrate. Intersperse your wine tasting with a glass of water every so often. That way, you’ll still be able talk in complete sentences at the end of the night and your head will thank you in the morning.

5. Snap that pic. If you taste a wine that you really, really love, augment the Wine Riot phone app with a phone pic of the label so you can easily find it on the wine store shelf when you want to buy a bottle for your very own.

Be sure to stop by the Dr. Loosen table and meet Master Sommelier Doug Krenik. See you there!

Meet Cullen McAlpine, Our Boston Wine Riot Volunteer

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

If you followed our coverage of the Second Glass Boston Wine Riot last week, you may remember our enthusiastic booth volunteer, Cullen McAlpine.

Cullen was so much fun, we thought our fans would enjoy his perspective on the Wine Riot. We caught up with Cullen in the final 18 hours of his undergraduate education at Harvard and grilled him about himself, wine and what it was like to wear lederhosen and staff our booth at the Riot.

Dr. Loosen: Tell us a little about yourself.

Cullen: I’m a Senior at Harvard who is about 18 hours away from finishing his last undergraduate class ever. I’m originally from Alaska but have traveled to many of the world’s wine regions, including summer internships in Napa Valley, CA, and Champagne, France. My major is in History with secondary fields in Spanish and French Language. My major has satisfied my intellectual curiosity and allowed me to travel the world, but I don’t think I will pursue History beyond college.

Dr. Loosen: Tell us about your interest in wine.

Cullen: My interest in wine was first developed with my father when I was much younger. We, both being bachelors, often went out to restaurants where I would take sips from his wine glass while he described the wine’s provenance and characteristics. In my teens I continued my exploration of wine and eventually ended up building a wine cellar in my basement with my stepfather. Wine is a great hobby for me and, although I do not think it will be my main vocation, it will be a constant passion throughout my life.

Dr. Loosen: How did you end up staffing the Loosen Boston Wine Riot booth?

Cullen: Ian Dick, Dr. Loosen’s East Coast Sales Manager, invited me to help him pour. I had already been acquainted with Dr. Loosen Rieslings so I eagerly accepted!

Dr. Loosen: What do you think of German Rieslings and Loosen in particular? Do you have a favorite Dr. Loosen wine?

Cullen: I love German Riesling! When you’re in the mood, no other wine will satisfy quite like a deliciously sweet and complex Riesling from the banks of the Mosel. Dr. Loosen does an excellent job displaying Riesling’s various characteristics, and I would be hard pressed to pick one above the rest, but I certainly enjoyed the Blue Slate Kabinett at the Wine Riot.

Dr. Loosen: What was it like, staffing the booth?

Cullen: It was an experience! The crowds are young, energetic, and always very eager to try the wine. It’s nice to be pouring wine at one of the more popular booths. The Beerenauslese in particular was enormously popular. When you’re tasting literally hundreds of wines, that delicious late harvest nectar still stands out above the rest.

Dr. Loosen: What’s with the lederhosen?

Cullen: I picked them up in Salzburg this summer on my way back from Champagne (I was obviously taking the long way home).  I wore my Lederhosen to the Wine Riot thinking that if there was ever a time to break them out, it was now! I think they went over rather well. In the first hour people seemed politely amused. By the second hour people would curiously ask me about them and question whether I was originally from Germany. To these questions I would usually respond that, “no I wasn’t from Germany but Dr. Loosen rewarded their best customers with authentic Lederhosen.” Everything was going pretty well until the fourth hour when I started to encounter the more….exuberant… tasters who insisted upon taking numerous pictures with me. After the fifth person grabbed me in a bear hug and asked me about my Germanic roots, I decided it was time to start heading home. Overall it was a fantastic experience made all the more sweet by Lederhosen.

Dr. Loosen: Any advice for people attending future wine riots?

Cullen: Pace yourself, eat plenty of food, and if you’re intent upon trying even half the wines, make sure to spit.

Dr. Loosen: Anything else you want to share with our readers?

Cullen: My favorite spot to drink Riesling: On a perfectly warm sunny day, take a bottle of your favorite Dr. Loosen Riesling down to the banks of the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and watch the boats row by. It doesn’t get much better than that.
