Nicolas Potel Burgundy Wine Dinner in Boston this Thursday

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Attention Burgundy lovers in Boston! Please join Loosen Bros. USA Sales Manager Ian Dick and the excellent folks at Federal Wine & Spirits for a special wine dinner this Thursday.

At the Table with Nicolas Potel: A Special Look at the 2009 Roche de Bellene Wines

WHERE: Upstairs on the Square, Cambridge, MA
WHEN: Thursday, February 9
TIME: 7 pm
RESERVATIONS: Call Federal Wine & Spirits at 617-367-8605 or email len@federalwine.com

Here’s what Len Rothenberg, owner of Federal Wine & Spirits, has to say about Nicolas Potel and his wines:

“Older Burgundy aficionados will remember the fine wines that Gerard Potel made at his Domaine de la Pousse d’Or until his death in 1997. Many Burgundy collectors are cellaring the wonderfully expressive 2005s that his son Nicolas made at Maison Potel, his first artisanal negociant venture.

Nicolas has launched a new house, Maison Roche de Bellene, using grapes from many of the same vineyards he worked with before. At Roche de Bellene (the name evokes the Roman name for Beaune) he has refined his method and is working toward more sustainable viticulture and natural fermentation methods.

I recently had a chance to taste a range of his red and white 2009s. They are very exciting wines. They are more classic, purer and more rigorous than the 2005s at the same stage, while keeping Nicolas’ signature fidelity to terroir. The Montagny and Meursault are note-perfect with the latter promising richness to come; the Savigny and Gevrey both richly spicy, and the Volnay Pitures, heady and deep.

Upstairs Chef Susan Regis meditated on the dinner wines and has proposed a menu that will make this meal a gracious pas de deux.”

MORE ABOUT DOMAINE DE BELLENE

Domaine de Bellene is a 24-hectare (59 acre) estate, with parcels in the villages of Beaune, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Saint-Roman, Santenay, Savigny-les-Beaune, Volnay and Vosne-Romanée. The focus is on expressive, terroir-driven wines from old vines (minimum 35 years old).

The vineyards have been farmed according to Biodynamic practices since 2006 and are now certified BIO. Vinification is minimalist in approach — no enzymes, cultured yeasts, chaptalization or acid adjustments are used and filtration is avoided.

Nicolas purchased the 16th century estate buildings in 2005 and is working to renovate them in as green a manner as possible. Environmental responsibility is being integrated into all aspects of the estate: buildings, vineyards, cellar work, energy conservation and production, and packaging materials.
