Oregon Wine Country Weekend

Meet winemaker Jay Somers and learn the secrets of his handcrafted Oregon Pinot Noirs.

Join J. Christopher Wines, one of Oregon’s premier artisanal wineries, for a weekend of wine indulgence in the picturesque Willamette Valley.

J. Christopher Wines is a small winery located on Chehalem Mountain in Oregon’s Northern Willamette Valley. The wines are handcrafted in small lots, sourced from some of the best vineyards in Oregon.

In 2010, winemaker Jay Somers formed a partnership with Ernst Loosen, of Germany’s famed Dr. Loosen estate, to plant vineyards and build a new winery on a 40 acre hilltop in the Chehalem Mountains AVA.

Jay invites you come tour the new winery, walk the newly planted vineyards, and enjoy a fun-filled long weekend (Thursday to Sunday) in Oregon Wine Country.

You will be greeted upon arrival in Portland and transported to the small town of Dundee, in the heart of wine country, where stylish accommodations for two couples are reserved at The Inn at Red Hills. After settling in, stroll next door to enjoy the culinary creativity of renowned Oregon chef, Daniel Mondok, at Paulée, the Willamette Valley’s newest fine-dining restaurant, with a decadent selection of wine pairings by Master Sommelier Brandon Tebbe.

Day two of your wine country experience will begin with a tour of some of the most stunning vineyard sites in the region. You’ll visit a handful of exceptional small wineries for private tastings and grand views. For dinner you’ll join Jay Somers and a few friends at Paley’s Place, one of Portland’s finest restaurants. This small, intimate establishment has been pleasing Portlandia diners for many years, and was recently featured in Saveur magazine.

Visit our beautiful new caves!

The third day of your stay will be spent at J. Christopher Wines. Jay will take you on a personal tour of the property, the vineyards and the winery. In the cellar, you’ll taste Pinot Noirs from the barrel, in a special comparison of vineyard sites, clones and barrel makers. As the culmination of your wine country visit, you’ll enjoy a magnificent tasting of vintage wines and a delicious gourmet meal of Oregon specialities, specially prepared by a local private chef, and served in the cellars of J. Christopher Wines.

The 2012 Frankland Estate International Riesling Tasting is the sixth celebration of the quality and diversity of the world’s finest Riesling wines sponsored by Frankland Estate. A not-to-be-missed celebration of the most noble of white wines, in all its diversity of style and regional nuances.

Tastings, master classes, lunches and dinners over this two-day event offer a rare opportunity to discover the astonishing diversity of the Riesling grape. Dry, off-dry and sweet style rieslings from new and old world regions will be examined – from as far afield as the Finger Lakes USA, Slovenia, South Africa, Alsace and Germany, to the riesling producing regions within Australia.

The tastings will be facilitated by an expert panel led by Jancis Robinson, world-renowned wine commentator and Master of Wine and Berlin-based international Riesling authority Stuart Pigott.

The event is part of an international ‘Riesling Coalition’ pioneered by Frankland Estate, which sees similar major Riesling celebrations hosted annually in different parts of the world.

The objective of the two-day event is to encourage and promote a greater understanding and enjoyment of this wonderful grape variety. The program, like a glass of fine Riesling, seeks to both ravish the senses and stimulate the intellect.

We are Mosel fans, because?

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Last week a group of Kimpton tour guests happened to be visiting Dr. Loosen for the weekend of the Mosel Weinfest in Bernkastel, the largest wine festival in the Mosel Valley. The Mosel regional trade group had a booth (“Gibt der Mosel ein Gesicht” = “Putting a face to the Mosel”) where they were taking photos of visitors and asking why they liked the Mosel.

Here’s the photo of our four guests and their reply to the question, “We are Mosel fans, because…?”

“Wir sind Mosel-Fans, because we love Ernst Loosen.”

Left to right: Daniel Lobsenz, wine director of Poste Brasserie in Washington DC; Amy Goldberger, wine director of Fifth Floor in San Francisco; Marian Jansen op de Haar, wine consultant for national restaurant chains; and Maureen Trippe, global accounts director for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates.

See Facebook album of the Festival’s photo booth.
