Epicure Magazine Features Ernst Loosen

Friday, April 12th, 2013

We’re honored to report that the April edition of Epicure Magazine (Singapore) has a feature story on Ernie Loosen.

Titled “Heart on his sleeve,” the article, by Lin Weiwen, tells the story of how Ernie took over the family’s 100-year-old ungrafted vines, adopted sustainable growing practices and built the Dr. Loosen brand into the global leader it is today.

Here’s a pdf of the piece, which has lovely photos of the Dr. Loosen estate and vineyards, as well as the newly planted Appassionata vineyard in Newberg, Oregon (USA) part of J. Christopher Wines, Ernie’s joint venture with Oregon winemaker Jay Somers.

Enjoy!

Loosen Up at Good For Nothing Exhibit in Miami

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Miami Peeps! Combine your love of art and wine at the Good For Nothing Art Exhibition, sponsored by Loosen Brothers USA and B-21 Wine Shop.

Please join us for the opening reception:

Friday, December 7th
7 pm to 10 pm
The Lab Miami
2750 NW 3rd Ave, Suite #11

You’ll be able to taste and purchase a full range of our wines, from Sekt to Spätlese, and even purchase bottles of the ones you like, thanks to co-sponsor B-21 Wine Company.

This is a special opportunity to taste “Loosen Up,” our special collaboration with the talented Good for Nothing exhibit artists Mitch and Dillon Froelich, who designed the awesome labels.

See you there!

Good for Nothing explores the notion of permanence found within society’s current way of expression.

Decades ago, any youthful, reckless activity would pass unknowingly through coming generations, hidden by time and only recalled through conversation if the desire existed. However, through the necessity to participate in today’s social networking explosion, each action is specifically recorded on a visible timeline.

With younger generations growing up, having instant access to viewing their predecessor’s actions and outlandish behaviors, there is an overwhelming uncertainty as to how the future will unfold.

Through illustration, painting, and mixed media, Good for Nothing sheds light to the satirical mess found within the sphere of permanence in social media.

Thanksgiving Festivities at J. Christopher Winery

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

The holidays are fast approaching, and what a busy year it’s been at our joint venture, J. Christopher Winery in Newberg, Oregon (USA).

The winery had a fantastic season with lots of people visiting and a great harvest–the fruit was gorgeous, and we think we’re going to have some fantastic wines from the 2012 vintage. We even picked the very first fruit from the Appassionata vineyard (in the photo, below).

The first-ever harvest from Appassionata vineyard at J. Christopher Winery.

If you’ll be in or near Oregon over the next two weeks, be sure to stop by the annual Thanksgiving celebration at the winery. You have several options!

SATURDAY, NOV 17 - Pre-Thanksgiving Open House for JCru Members

Join Winemaker Jay Somers, along with his family and friends, in the barrel cellar and be among the first to enjoy the 2010 single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, which include the ever-popular Sandra Adele, new bottlings from neighboring Olenik and Lia’s Vineyards, as well as the always-spectacular Abbey Ridge Vineyard. We’ll also be showing two of our most sought-after 2011 white wines: the Blanc de Noir and the Croft Vineyard Über Sauvignon, a very unique wine fermented in an acacia wood barrel. Come taste with us and stock up for the holidays!

Exclusively for our JCru and JCru Wine Club members. This will be a complimentary tasting as our way of saying thank you for always supporting us and our wines. (Want to be a JCru member? It’s FREE! Join the JCru here!)

Open hours: Saturday, Nov. 17, 11 am to 3 pm

FRIDAY/SATURDAY, Nov 23 & 24 – Thanksgiving Weekend Open House

Everyone’s invited to our Thanksgiving Weekend Open House, where we’ll be showing the same wines as at the JCru Open House and may throw in something special, maybe even some music from Jay and Tim? You never know!

Open hours: Friday & Saturday, Nov. 23 & 24, 11 am to 3 pm

Tasting fee: $10 (one refundable tasting fee per $200 purchase)

Discount: 10% on case purchases (including mixed cases)

Location: 17150 NE Hillside Drive, Newberg, Oregon (We have great directions from Portland on our website. Better than Google’s, which will send you on a round-about detour.)

Hope you can join us!

Looking forward to seeing you and wishing everyone a lovely holiday.

Wine & Spirits Top 100 Wineries Reviews for C. von Schubert

Monday, October 1st, 2012

Last week we were honored to share with you that Wine & Spirits named C. von Schubert—along with Dr. Loosen and Robert Weil—to the Top 100 Wineries of 2012. The list recognizes wineries from around the world that have delivered the best overall performances in W&S tastings throughout the year.

We thought you’d like to know what Wine & Spirits says about C. von Schubert/Maximin Grünhäuser wines. (C. von Schubert is part of our “Friends of Ernst Loosen” portfolio.)

And if you’ll be in San Francisco on Oct. 17, please join us for the W&S Top 100 Tasting at City View at METREON, where we will be pouring the 2010 Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Auslese Nr. 37 (94 points), as well as the 2011 Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Kabinett.

2010 Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Kabinett
[92] Wine & Spirits (Year’s Best)
While this is still wrapped up in its notes of native yeast fermentation, it already shows a silky elegance, its citrus and stone fruit flavors feeling long, graceful and lithe. Another stunning release from an estate in top form.

2010 Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Auslese Nr. 21
[92] Wine & Spirits (Year’s Best)
This is voluptuous for a von Schubert wine, its papaya, guava and fresh apple flavors forward and full. It’s pinned down by acidity, feeling lively if not overtly racy, and its slate undertones should emerge further with time in the cellar.

2010 Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Auslese Nr. 24
[91] Wine & Spirits (Year’s Best)
This is concentrated and intense, with a core of piercing fruit flavors ranging from citrus to pineapple to mango. Its acidity is as powerful as its ripeness, making the wine feel vivid and resonant all the way through the long, spicy finish.

2010 Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Auslese Nr. 37
[94] Wine & Spirits (Year’s Best)
Where von Schubert’s #24 feels concentrated and intense, the #37 thrives on its elegance and poise, feeling rich in ripeness yet crystaline in its lacy structure and its multifaceted, delicate aromas. The floral notes of white peach and grapefruit peel seem almost incidental next to the prominent slatey minerality, and the whole package resonates with nearly electric tension.

Hope to see you at the W&S Top 100 tasting!

Wine & Spirits Top 100 Wineries Reviews for Robert Weil

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Last week we were honored to share with you that Wine & Spirits named Robert Weil—along with Dr. Loosen and C. von Schubert—to the Top 100 Wineries of 2012. The list recognizes wineries from around the world that have delivered the best overall performances in W&S tastings throughout the year.

Robert Weil winemaker Wilhelm Weil

We thought you’d like to know what Wine & Spirits says about Robert Weil wines. (Robert Weil is part of our “Friends of Ernst Loosen” portfolio.)

And if you’ll be in San Francisco on Oct. 17, please join us for the W&S Top 100 Tasting at City View at METREON, where we will be pouring the 2010 Gräfenberg BA and the 2010 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken.

2010 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Trocken Erstes Gewächs
[90] Wine & Spirits
This shows an elegant and pure expression of minerality, its fragrantly stony aromas infusing the richly textured fruit. It’s tautly structurd and vividly defined, finishing with a briny, savory complexity.

2010 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Spätlese
[94] Wine & Spirits
This is exceptionally sophisticated in the way it expresses its fruit on the palate, unfolding with graceful elegance and multi-dimensional complxity. While it’s opulent in its concentration of flavor, it also feels saturated by a dark, stony minerality, adding to the sense of detail and finesse.

2010 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Beerenauslese
[95] Wine & Spirits
While this is undeniably rich, it also demonstrates a marvelous detail, its velvety flavors of roasted peach and tropical fruits enlivened by a firm spine of acidity. It’s complex and palate staining in its intensity, yet for all its power, it’s most impressive for its elegance, refinement and poise.

Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese
[96] Wine & Spirits
The class of this site is on full display even at this level of must-weight. While powerfully concentrated with luscious flavors of yellow peach, mango and jackfruit, the wine carries them with astounding grace and poise, energized by vivid acidity and made more complex by insistent aromas of slate. This is almost daunting in its intensity, yet if feels exceptionally harmonious, expanding on the palate with gripping length.

Blackberry Farm Weekend “A Match Made in Heaven”

Monday, August 27th, 2012

Ernie Loosen with Guest Chef Alan Wong and Executive Chef Joseph Lenn at Blackberry Farm in Tennessee, which featured an entire weekend devoted to Dr. Loosen/J. Christopher wines paired with Alan Wong’s Hawaiian cooking.

We think it’s fair to say that a great time was had by all. One guest at the weekend described it as “a marriage made in heaven.”
