Aged Eroica Riesling

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

If you follow us, you probably know that Ernst Loosen has a joint venture with Chateau Ste. Michelle in Washington State (US) to produce Eroica Riesling.

Among Old World Riesling producers of Europe, Riesling is renowned for its capacity to age beautifully for decades. For centuries, aged Rieslings have been the benchmark of quality. This spring Eroica, the first American Riesling to offer aged vintages, will re-release 2007 Eroica Riesling cellared for an additional five years of bottle age and 2001 Eroica Single Berry Select ten years post-vintage.

This lovely video, with a “guest star” appearance by Jancis Robinson, lets you behind the scenes to see how winemakers Ernst Loosen and Robert Bertheau work together to create Eroica, and now, for the first time, an aged vintage of Eroica. And a New Eroica Vintage is Born…

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Erni Loosen recently headed to Woodinville, Washington, to join winemakers Bob Bertheau and Wendy Stuckey for the annual blending of Eroica Riesling, a joint venture between Dr. Loosen and Chateau Ste. Michelle. Here are some pictures for an insider’s look at the making of this fabulous wine.

First tasting session. They started with 63 lots of Riesling from various vineyards and narrowed the list down to half that by the day's end, reaching toward a final blend of six or eight.

Bob and Erni get deeper into round one of the Eroica selection tasting.

The Eroica team has finished the blending of the new vintage. Very pure and bright and minerally. A perfect reflection of the cool growing season and late-arriving harvest. The new vintage will be released in early summer this year.

More tasting! The Eroica team tastes through eight vintages of the Eroica Single Berry Select, a TBA style dessert Riesling from Washington, through 2010. The 2011 is still fermenting.

Thanks, Seattle Magazine!

Now that we’re two months into 2011, we want to take a moment to express our appreciation to Seattle Magazine for naming Dr. Loosen, Eroica Riesling (our joint venture with Chateau Ste. Michelle) and Riesling Rendezvous in their “Best of Decade” wine category (December 2010 issue).

We’re very honored and look forward to the next ten trips around the sun as Riesling’s popularity continues to grow and flourish on the worldwide wine stage.
