Dr. Loosen Wins Four U.K. Decanter World Wine Awards

Saturday, June 9th, 2012

GREAT NEWS! We are honored to share with you that four Dr. Loosen wines received Decanter World Wine awards at the U.K. judging in May. Here they are:

  • Dr Loosen Urziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett 2011 (COMMENDED)
  • Dr Loosen Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese 2010 (SILVER)
  • Dr Loosen Urziger Würzgarten Riesling TBA 2009 (GOLD)
  • Dr Loosen Dr L Riesling 2011 (BRONZE)
  • With 14,119 wines tasted it was the largest entry ever for the Decanter World Wine Awards, now in its 9th year. More than 200 wine merchants, sommeliers, journalists and authors, including 54 Masters of Wine and 11 Master Sommeliers, took part in a week of judging in April.

Although the majority of wines entered come from the world’s great wine regions, a particular strength of the Decanter World Wine Awards is its championing of lesser-known and smaller regions.

Nothing Says “Romance” Like a Lovely Riesling BA

    Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Looking for the right Valentine gift for the wine lover in your life?

Surprise your sweetheart with a bottle of Dr. Loosen Beerenauslese (BA).

Beerenauslese (“berry select”) is a rich, honeyed dessert wine made from grapes that have been shriveled by botrytis, the “Noble Rot.”

These extremely concentrated, moldy grapes are painstakingly separated from the unaffected fruit and vinified to make one of Germany’s most prized vinous treasures.

Our Beerenauslese, exclusively from estate-owned vineyards, has a juicy mouthful of ripe fruits with a finish that is long and satisfying, but never heavy.

It’s perfect as an aperitif, with foie gras, or with light desserts featuring fresh fruits.

And while we’re thinking of love, let us just say that we love our customers! Cheers!

Three Tips for Your Holiday Wines

    Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Wondering what to serve with your holiday festivities this year? Here are some tips for you from the gang at Loosen Bros. USA.

    Sparkle, Sparkle, Sparkle

The holidays are a sparkly time of year, and there’s nothing better than a glass of tiny bubbles to make them all the brighter. For you Riesling lovers, now you can celebrate with Dr. L Sparkling Riesling. Bright and bubbly and fruity and tasty – it’s affordable for your holiday or your everyday! Bring an extra bottle to parties for a hostess gift and polish your reputation as a shining star.

    A Taste for Every Tradition

Whichever holiday you celebrate, traditional foods often have a bit of sweetness to them. So whether it’s ham, sweet potatoes, fruitcake or sufganiyot, there’s no better match than fresh, fruity Riesling. But which one? Choose a Riesling with similar weight to your food dish. A delicate Kabinett such as our Dr. Loosen Blue Slate will pair well with lighter foods such as fresh crab or latkes. A ripe Spätlese such as our Wehlener Sonnenuhr is perfect for richer foods such as honey ham. Choose an Auslese such as our Dr. Loosen Erdener Prälat for sweeter (fresh fruit) or very rich foods (creamy sauces). And big honkin’ dessert wines (BA or Eiswein) for, well, dessert.

    Nimble Pinot Noir

If you’re looking for a wine to pair with roasted birds, grilled salmon, charcuterie and cheese, look to Pinot Noir, a very nimble wine for food. In our portfolio, J. Christopher (Oregon) and Maison Roche de Bellene (Burgundy) give you quite a range of Pinots to choose from – elegant and delicate (J. Christopher Sandra Adele or Maison Roche de Bellene Chambolle-Musigny) to full-bodied and rich (J. Christopher Dundee Hills Cuvée or Maison Roche de Bellene Gevrey-Chambertin).

You can learn more about all of these wines (and more) on the Loosen Bros. USA website. And of course, if you’re still stumped about which of our wines to serve for the holidays, you can always post a question to us on Facebook or Tweet us: @DrLoosenWines. Cheers!

Ned Ludd Restaurant Hosts J. Christopher & Dr. Loosen Wine Salon

    Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Every third Tuesday of the month, Ned Ludd Restaurant in Portland, Oregon, hosts a “wine salon”. The February salon featured J. Christopher and Dr. Loosen wines, and was such a good time, we thought we’d let Ned Ludd wine manager Jess Pierce tell you all about it.

    Jess says:

“We were so excited to have Loosen Bros as part of our Wine Salon at Ned Ludd. The idea of the Salon is to create a space in which folks in the service/wine/grape/food industry can get together to talk about our place in Oregon and the wine industry as a whole. We are here because we all have wine in common, but everyone involved is so dynamic that the event goes many ways and lets everyone have real conversations about any number of things. It’s not just a wine dinner even though wine and dinner are involved.

Our February salon was great! Having (Loosen Bros. VP) Kirk Wille speak about Germany is always really exciting. His level of knowledge is astonishing. I love the chunks of slate that he carries around for people to touch and smell, and it gives even more of a tangible sense of place than with just drinking the wines. The wines were showing really well and the comparison of blue and red slate wines is so interesting. We also poured the BA (Beerenauslese), which is one of my favs, with dessert. It was rad having Kirk and (J. Christopher winemaker) Jay Somers pair up to do the salon together because they both have so many great stories about each other’s wines and do a great job of telling Ernie’s (Ernst Loosen) story as well.

The Wine Salon is something I am really excited about. Meeting folks in the biz as well as getting a chance to spend time with friends is such a fun opportunity.”

If you have a chance to attend one (or many) of Ned Ludd’s wine salons, we highly recommend them!
