Have You Tried Robert Weil Rieslings?

Saturday, May 18th, 2013

weil.left

Founded in only 1875, Weingut Robert Weil is considered to be one of the Rheingau’s younger wine estates. The estate’s top vineyards—Kiedrich, Turmberg and Kiedrich Gräfenberg—are among the finest sites in the Rheingau.

Robert Weil wines are imported to the United States by Loosen Bros. USA as part of our “Friends of Ernst Loosen” portfolio. The selection includes Robert Weil’s estate wines, single-vineyard wines and noble sweet wines. (See the Loosen Bros. list of Weil wines with details about each wine.)

This month (May 2013), Wine Spectator magazine named two Robert Weil wines to their Top German Wines list:

  • Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg TBA (95)
  • Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg TBA (94)

Here’s some detail on three more Robert Weil wines, all available through Loosen Bros. USA.

RobertWeilTurmbergTrocken2011LabelROBERT WEIL KIEDRICH TURMBERG RIESLING TROCKEN (DRY) 2011
Kiedrich Turmberg (“tower hill”), a separate slope adjacent to the Gräfenberg vineyard, is rated as premier cru. The German wine law of 1971 had incorporated Turmberg into the Gräfenberg, but in 2005 it was reinstated as an individual, classified site. The steep, southwest-facing site has a slate base with a thin topsoil layer composed of stony, gritty phyllite mixed with loess and loam. It produces very fine, elegant wines that are less massive than their counterparts from the Gräfenberg. Turmberg is wholly owned by Weingut Robert Weil. The Turmberg Trocken (dry) is bright and pure, with a lovely herbal tone that is characteristic of this site. It has a finely focused mineral structure and a juicy grip on the palate.

[93] Wine & Spirits (Year’s Best)

From a steep, craggy 9.4 acre monopole planted to vines since 1109, this is stunning wine. It gives the sense of having great size without any weight; of being fruity without any sweetness. It tastes like a mouthful of rocks and like the air after a rain. There’s a scent of delicate tropical fruits and flowers that lasts with a clarity that carries it for miles. December 2012

[91] Wine Spectator

Juicy and rich, with a light creaminess to the peach, apricot and ripe apple flavors. Notes of pear tart linger on the spicy finish alongside hints of sage and tarragon. March 31,2013

[89] Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar

Aromas of yellow plum and bay leaf. Succulent passion fruit flavor is given grip and vibrancy by stony minerality. In a full-bodied style, with a nicely spiced finish. Good potential. January/February 2013

RobertWeilGrafenbergEG2011LabelROBERT WEIL KIEDRICH GRÄFENBERG RIESLING TROCKEN ERSTES GEWACHS 2011
The deep to medium-deep stony soil of the Gräfenberg hillside is made up of phyllite interspersed with loess and loam. The Kiedrich Gräfenberg Trocken “Erstes Gewächs” is a perfect specimen of this mineral rich terroir, displaying extremely rich character and complexity. A full-bodied, dry-style wine, it offers a provocative balance of fruit, spice and flintiness. Fermented naturally in large wooden casks, the Kiedrich Gräfenberg Erstes Gewächs has a full, stony fruit aroma. It is weighty and complex on the palate, yet still quite elegant, with extraordinary length to the finish.

The Erstes Gewächs (“first growth”) designation is used only in the Rheingau. Similar to the term Grosses Gewächs used in other German wine regions, it is reserved for the finest dry wine from a classified vineyard. Rigorous quality standards apply, and each Erstes Gewächs candidate has to be tasted and approved by the Rheingau’s governing wine board before it can be released.

[92] Wine & Spirits (Year’s Best)

Like the nearby Turmberg, this site is mostly phyllite, a metamorphic rock that falls between slate and schist. Here, however, the impression is ripe and sunny, the pear flavor as smooth and rich as custard. Minerality turns the flavors toward more herbal registers in the end, tight and mouthwatering. December 2012

[92] Wine Spectator

Rich and complex, with concentrated and well-spiced flavors and ripe peach, pear and dried apricot. Baked pineapple and honey cream notes are prevalent as well. Smoke and hickory notes show on the finish. March 31, 2013

[90] Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar

Delicate aromas of white peach, lemon oil and acacia blossom. Dense guava fruit complicated by an oyster shell spiciness and a touch of honeysuckle. In spite of its weight this wine dances across the palate. Excellent clarity on the finish. January/February 2013

[★★★★★] Restaurant Wine

First rate dry Riesling from this top Kiedrich estate. It is rich, supple, and ripely flavored; a wine with excellent depth of fruit (peach, apple, pineapple, lemon peel, lily of the valley), a hint of wood character, and a long, full finish. Still quite young; needs aging. December 2012

weil.right

RobertWeilGrafenbergSpatlese2011LabelROBERT WEIL KIEDRICH GRÄFENBERG RIESLING SPÄTLESE 2011

Always stunning, the Spätlese (“late picked”) from Kiedrich Gräfenberg is a massive wine of bewildering depth and complexity, with many layers of gorgeous fruit that unfold on the palate. It is a stately wine with power, harmony and impeccable balance.

The Kiedrich Gräfenberg Spätlese is enormously lush and ripe, but with a firm backbone from the elevated acidity of the vintage. It is massive and complex on the palate with deep, dense layers of fruit and a fine fruit finish that lingers endlessly.

[95] The Tasting Panel

Explosive and bursting with peach, apricot and lime; sweet, lush and juicy with exquisite tension between sugar and acid; honeysuckle, light minerals and stunning balance; long and amazing. November 2012

[93] Wine Spectator

Complex and redolent of tropical fruit flavors, with plenty of guava, mango and ripe pineapple. Offers intense notes of apple and ripe nectarine, all on a broad frame. Rich and creamy on the bright finish, featuring juicy acidity and citrus peel accents. Dec. 31, 2012

[93] Wine & Spirits (Year’s Best)

This is succulent and intense, a compact, powerful punch of sweet lemon-lime flavor. It bursts open like a fireworks display, showering the palate with a sparkling array of fruit and floral flavors, then fades away cleanly. Dynamic and youthful, this is a good candidate for another decade or two in the cellar. December 2012

[92] Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar

Delicate floral lift to the aromas of yellow plum, quince and vanilla. A honeyed richness develops over the wine’s mineral foundation, providing complexity to go with the brightness. A salty crispness keeps the palate fresh. One of the finest Spätleses of the vintage in the Rheingau. January/February 2013

[★★★★★] Restaurant Wine

Wow! The Gräfenberg—one of the Rheingau’s greatest vineyards—is a remarkable Spätlese, in a full, complex, refined style. It is very concentrated, crisp, and extremely long on the finish, with refined aromas/flavors (white peach, pineapple, linden blossom, lemon peel, honey). Superb quality. December 2012

Carl von Schubert’s 2013 US Visit

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

If you haven’t yet tried the wines of Mosel Riesling genius Carl von Schubert, don’t wait another minute!

The historic Maximin Grünhaus estate lies at the foot of a long, steep south-facing slope on the left bank of the tiny Ruwer river, about two kilometers upstream from where it joins the Mosel. The estate belongs to the family of Carl von Schubert and is divided into three separate but contiguous vineyards: Abtsberg, Herrenberg, and Bruderberg. Each of these vineyards has its own distinct differences in terroir, which explain the unique character of the wines made at Grünhaus.

Wine & Spirits gave 94 points & a “Year’s Best” award to his Riesling Trocken Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg, Alte Reben 2011.

Old vines planted in the mixed red and blue slate of this vineyard drew out an exceptional wine in 2011. Its crisp, succulent citrus fruit has the clarity of a note plucked from a violin string, the tones growing deeper with each reverberation, reaching into a dense, almost oily mineral- ity. The stone flavors have a salty note that’s particularly mouthwatering; a youthful riesling ready for anything. December 2012

Carl has been touring a few of the US southern states this month with Loosen Bros. USA Southeast Sales Manager Sarah Noble visiting Fish Restaurant in Charleston and The Wine Shop at Foxcroft in Charlotte.

Here's Carl with Jodie Battles, GM of Fish Restaurant in Charleston, NC. (At Fish Restaurant)

MORE ABOUT DOMAINE DE BELLENE

Domaine de Bellene is a 24-hectare (59 acre) estate, with parcels in the villages of Beaune, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Saint-Roman, Santenay, Savigny-les-Beaune, Volnay and Vosne-Romanée. The focus is on expressive, terroir-driven wines from old vines (minimum 35 years old).

The vineyards have been farmed according to Biodynamic practices since 2006 and are now certified BIO. Vinification is minimalist in approach — no enzymes, cultured yeasts, chaptalization or acid adjustments are used and filtration is avoided.

Nicolas purchased the 16th century estate buildings in 2005 and is working to renovate them in as green a manner as possible. Environmental responsibility is being integrated into all aspects of the estate: buildings, vineyards, cellar work, energy conservation and production, and packaging materials.

Three Tips for Your Holiday Wines

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Wondering what to serve with your holiday festivities this year? Here are some tips for you from the gang at Loosen Bros. USA.

Sparkle, Sparkle, Sparkle

The holidays are a sparkly time of year, and there’s nothing better than a glass of tiny bubbles to make them all the brighter. For you Riesling lovers, now you can celebrate with Dr. L Sparkling Riesling. Bright and bubbly and fruity and tasty – it’s affordable for your holiday or your everyday! Bring an extra bottle to parties for a hostess gift and polish your reputation as a shining star.

A Taste for Every Tradition

Whichever holiday you celebrate, traditional foods often have a bit of sweetness to them. So whether it’s ham, sweet potatoes, fruitcake or sufganiyot, there’s no better match than fresh, fruity Riesling. But which one? Choose a Riesling with similar weight to your food dish. A delicate Kabinett such as our Dr. Loosen Blue Slate will pair well with lighter foods such as fresh crab or latkes. A ripe Spätlese such as our Wehlener Sonnenuhr is perfect for richer foods such as honey ham. Choose an Auslese such as our Dr. Loosen Erdener Prälat for sweeter (fresh fruit) or very rich foods (creamy sauces). And big honkin’ dessert wines (BA or Eiswein) for, well, dessert.

Nimble Pinot Noir

If you’re looking for a wine to pair with roasted birds, grilled salmon, charcuterie and cheese, look to Pinot Noir, a very nimble wine for food. In our portfolio, J. Christopher (Oregon) and Maison Roche de Bellene (Burgundy) give you quite a range of Pinots to choose from – elegant and delicate (J. Christopher Sandra Adele or Maison Roche de Bellene Chambolle-Musigny) to full-bodied and rich (J. Christopher Dundee Hills Cuvée or Maison Roche de Bellene Gevrey-Chambertin).

You can learn more about all of these wines (and more) on the Loosen Bros. USA website. And of course, if you’re still stumped about which of our wines to serve for the holidays, you can always post a question to us on Facebook or Tweet us: @DrLoosenWines. Cheers!

REVIEWS OF ROBERT WEIL WINES FROM JANCIS ROBINSON

Robert Weil, Riesling trocken 2009 Rheingau 15.5 Drink 2010-2013 Bright, candified, crystal-clear fruit. Far from funky but a good straightforward expression of ripe, clean, relatively full-bodied Riesling. Just off dry thanks to all that ripeness of 2009. Just a little pinched on the finish. 12%

Robert Weil, Kiedricher Klosterberg Riesling trocken 2009 Rheingau 16 Drink 2011-2015 Rather opulent, nutty nose – real horizontal spread on this wine. Very sprightly and super-clean. Lots of acidity and really rather unresolved at the moment. Still a little astringent. The palate needs to catch up with the nose. 13%
Robert Weil, Kiedricher Turmberg Riesling trocken 2009 Rheingau 16 Drink 2012-2016 Wet stones on the nose. This wine is so eager it almost pants at you with its super-clean freshness. Acidity is a little painful at present. Wait! Some glucose sensation. More embryonic than many 2009 trockens. 13%

Robert Weil, Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Erstes Gewächs 2009 Rheingau 17.5 Drink 2010-2016 NB that alcohol level! Much denser and more complex on the nose than the Klosterberg and Turmberg trockens. Minerality is the dominant aroma. Lovely ripeness and a bit of pungency on the front palate and a certain elegance on the finish. This is a complete wine that should drink well for quite a while. The acidity seems notably well integrated. 13.5%

Robert Weil, Kiedricher Klosterberg Riesling Spätlese 2009 Rheingau 17 Drink 2013-2020 Fairly neutral nose that speaks more of winemaking than the vineyard at present. Broad honey and flowers on the front palate. Super clean and fresh with very marked acidity and some astringency. Wait for this to settle down to – surely – a particularly pretty wine. 8.5%

Robert Weil, Kiedricher Turmberg Riesling Spätlese 2009 Rheingau 16.5 Drink 2014-2021 Minerality on the nose but not quite such a clear expression of it at this juncture as in the trocken version. Very young and unresolved with the residual sugar and the acidity miles apart at the moment. Strong citrus notes – almost painful citrus acidity. Rather gawky. But super clean! 8.5%

Robert Weil, Kiedricher Klosterberg Riesling Auslese 2009 Rheingau 17 Drink 2014-2024 Almost ‘hot’ on the nose! Like lemon balm with a hint of verveine tisane. Lots of sweetness, lots of acidity and the strong promise that one of these days they will be the best of friends. 8%

Robert Weil, Kiedricher Turmberg Riesling Auslese 2009 Rheingau 17.5 Drink 2014-2024 Some smokiness on the nose. Not quite as sweet as the Klosterberg. Lots of pure lemon syrup. Firm and bright with a reassuringly solid undertow already. Surprisingly well integrated even now. Confident delivery, even if no surprises. 8.5%

Robert Weil, Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Beerenauslese 2009 Rheingau 18.5 Drink 2017-2037 Very dense on the nose with lots of layers and complexity. Wonderful texture – like another firmament when compared with the Auslese. The business..! Such purity and balance. This is molten honey kept in check by supremely well-judged corsetry in which acidity plays an important part. This should have a glorious future. 8%

Robert Weil, Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2009 Rheingau 19+ Drink 2020-2040 Deep bronze-gold. (Much darker than the Beerenauslese.) Toasty, lively nose. Massively sweet and with a hint of rose petals and the acidity not nearly as integrated as in the Beerenauslese. A real tightrope walker of a wine with the acidity clamouring for attention and the richness only just managing to suppress it. Needs lots and lots of time… Could anyone with a sore throat resist this elixir? 6.5%

Weingut Robert Weil Riesling Named to Wine Spectator Top 100

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

wineweilrieslingtrockenCongratulations to our “Friends of Ernie” portfolio member Weingut Robert Weil on having their 2009 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken named a Wine Spectator Top 100 wine for 2010!

Deep in mineral-driven aroma and rich on the palate, this distinctive Riesling comes from Weil’s wholly owned parcel beneath the medieval Gräfenberg tower in the Rheingau.

Here’s what Wine Spectator says:

[93] Wine Spectator – “Top 100”
“A pungent, aromatic white, with gooseberry, peony and spice on the nose. Racy and vividly flavored, with citrus intensity and a laserlike finish. A bit extreme, yet full of personality and a sense of place.” – Rated #81 in the 2010 Top 100.

About Weingut Robert Weil
Founded in 1875, Weingut Robert Weil is considered to be one of the Rheingau’s younger wine estates. It is located in the heart of Kiedrich, a village first documented in the year 950. Kiedrich Turmberg, one of the estate’s top vineyards, is among the finest sites in the Rheingau.

Loosen wine info sheetAbout the Kiedrich Turmberg Vineyard
Kiedrich Turmberg (“tower hill”), a separate hill right next to the Gräfenberg vineyard, is rated as premier cru.

The German wine law of 1971 incorporated Turmberg into the Gräfenberg, but in 2005 it was reinstated as an individual, classified site.

The steep, southwest-facing site has a slate base with a thin topsoil layer composed of stony, gritty phyllite mixed with loess and loam. It produces very fine, elegant wines that are less massive than their counterparts from the Gräfenberg.
